- The Office on Women's Expect Respect program is seeking a group of volunteers to present an educational program which promotes healthy relationships to Alexandria youth. The vounteers present to 7th graders and high school students throughout the school year. The expected volunteer commitment is four to six hours per month and volunteers must have the flexibility to present during the school day. Volunteers are required to complete a one day training. The training will be held on Saturday, January 9th, from 9 to 4 pm. In-class observations will be scheduled after training is completed. - Domestic Violence Court Advocates Needed. The Office on Women seeks volunteers to support and accompany victims of domestic violence to court hearings. Volunteers must be willing to attend training to become oriented to the criminal justice system, as well as to dynamics of domestic violence and crisis intervention skills. Volunteers must be able to work one morning a week (on Monday, Wednesday or Friday) between the hours of 8:00 am and 12:00 pm. - Volunteer with the battered women’s shelter for the Domestic Violence (DV) program. The DV shelter program requires 40 hours of training. Volunteer as a hotline companion with the Sexual Assault Response and Awareness (SARA) Program. If you are looking for a dynamic volunteer experience with the chance to make a difference, the SARA program has the right opportunity for you. SARA seeks compassionate listeners, both English speaking and bilingual, who would be comfortable talking to sexual assault survivors and their families. SARA requires volunteers to complete 40 hours of training to become a hotline companion. While the initial training commitment is intensive, the commitment following training is two hotline shifts per month. Volunteers take shifts from home or anywhere accessible by phone. SARA training sessions meet two evenings a week from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm on Monday and Wednesday and on two Saturday mornings over a five week period. - Volunteer for the Walk to Fight Breast Cancer. Help spread awareness of the importance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer while helping to raise funds to pay for mammograms and other diagnostic screenings for un- and under-insured women living in Alexandria who might not otherwise receive this important, preventative care. There are many rewarding opportunities for volunteers to help with the organization and management of the Walk. - Volunteer with our Speakers Bureau. The Office on Women's Speakers' Bureau is a group of volunteers who present an educational program on domestic violence, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and teen pregnancy prevention to Alexandria youth. The Speakers Bureau presents to 7th, 9th and 10th graders throughout the school year. The expected volunteer commitment is four to six hours per month and volunteers must have the flexibility to present during the school day. Volunteers are required to complete 10 hours of training. The 10-hour required training will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 10 & 11, from 7 to 10 pm, and on Saturday, November 14 from 9 am until 1 pm. - Help spread awareness. The Alexandria Domestic Violence Program needs volunteers ages 18 & up to help distribute educational and public awareness materials. Volunteers are given a list of locations in the City of Alexandria and you can go at your own pace. Please call Jen Clayton at 703-838-4911 or email at jen.clayton@alexandriava.gov.
Help get much-needed items for the shelter. The Alexandria Domestic Violence Program will need volunteers ages 18 & up to help with our "Grocery Store Donation Day," which will take place during September, 2010 (check back for a specific date during early summer of 2010). Morning and/or afternoon shifts will be available. All grocery store locations are in the City of Alexandria. We will solicit items needed for the Domestic Violence Shelter which houses women and children fleeing from abusive homes. Volunteer on an as-needed basis. All programs sponsored by the Office on Women always need volunteers on an as-needed basis for literature distribution, event support, and administrative support. For more information, contact the Office on Women at 703.746.5030.

Currently, we serve Alexandria schools with a curriculum designed for grades five, seven and nine/ten. The Expect Respect curriculum is intended to provide information, support and guidance for school aged students. The objectives of the curriculum are to help students:
- Define terms associated with sexual harassment, sexual assault, domestic violence and teen pregnancy prevention
- Recognize destructive and unhealthy patterns of behavior in relationships
- Set goals and make choices that lead to safety awareness and risk reduction and that value the self and others
- Recognize the importance of clear communication, assertive behavior and self- respect for establishing and maintaining violence free, healthy relationships
- Understand the importance of delaying sexual intercourse and choosing behaviors that reduce the risk of teen pregnancy

We rely heavily on donations from the community to assist the many families affected by abuse in Alexandria. While all donations are truly appreciated, there are times when the program is in need of specific items.
