Project STEPOUT

Project Stepout is a program that provides adolescent girls with information and skills to take control of their lives in a responsible manner in order to become productive citizens.  Leadership and support for the program is provided by program staff and volunteers.  The Office on Women recruits volunteers, locates space and organizes all the program elements.  A community organization or business may choose to sponsor a group, provide a location and/or volunteers for a program.  All of the training for the volunteers is provided by the Office on Women staff.  Volunteers hold positions as workshop leaders, mentors and occasional speakers.

Curricula and Structure

Project Stepout is run as an after-school program in Alexandria City Public Schools and other community based locations.  Project Stepout replicates three science based curricula:

  • Making Proud Choices
  • Becoming a Responsible Teen
  • Focus on Kids

Youth participate in a structured program that includes group discussion, role playing, videos and speakers.  Meetings are held weekly for a predetermined length of time.  For more information, please contact Kim Hurley at 703-746.5030 or kim.hurley@alexandriava.gov
