Eisenhower Avenue Widening Project
The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) is working on a roadway improvement project along Eisenhower Avenue between Holland Lane and Telegraph Road. Eisenhower Avenue Widening Design
Background and Description of Project
The east Eisenhower Valley area of the City of Alexandria is undergoing significant mixed-use development and redevelopment, with land uses that include office, retail, entertainment, hotel and residential. This area, located west of Old Town Alexandria, is bounded by Telegraph Road (VA Route 611) to the west, I-95 / I-495 (Capital Beltway) to the south, Holland Lane to the east and Duke Street (VA Route 236) to the north. Existing, approved and potential development within eastern Eisenhower Valley includes three primary areas, Hoffman Town Center, Mill Race and Carlyle properties.
Eisenhower Avenue is the spine of this new district, running from Holland Lane westward along the southern edge of the Carlyle development (Patent & Trademark Office) and through the Eisenhower Avenue Metro station west to Telegraph Road. Community planning charrettes have planned this avenue as a grand boulevard, establishing a gateway for this development area.
This project complements the design of Eisenhower Avenue between Holland Lane, east, to Stovall Street, west, creating a large urban tree-lined boulevard to be the spine of the new district.
Eisenhower Avenue will be a thirty three (33) ft. roadway, in each direction, accommodating three (3) travel lanes, with the curb lane to be available for parking during off peak periods only. The roadways will be separated by wide tree-lined park median with left turn bays and ranging in width from 30ft. to 36ft. between Holland Lane and Mill Road, while between Mill Road and Stovall Street, the median will range from 12ft. to 14ft. This reduced width is due to restricted width crossing under Metro. The road will then transition to meet the approach to the Eisenhower Avenue Bridge over Telegraph Road at the west end.
The facility is accentuated on both sides by wide active sidewalks. On the north side, twenty two (22)ft. wide sidewalks, to include six (6) ft. wide planting strip with tree wells every thirty (30) ft. and sixteen (16) ft. wide sidewalk running all the way on the north side from Holland Lane to Stovall St. On the south side between Holland Lane and Mill Road, the sidewalk will be identical to the north sidewalk. The sidewalk on the south side from Mill Road west to Stovall Street will have a total width from curb to R-O-W line, of thirty one (31)ft. This will include a ten (10) foot wide bicycle path, as well as a six (6) foot planting strip.
