How to Buy Green Power
Purchasing green power, or electricity produced from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and biogas, is an excellent way to support the renewable energy industry without making any physical changes to your building. If your business supports renewable energy but doesn’t have the means or infrastructure for on-site solar panels or wind turbines, green power offers an alternative.
For businesses and residences in Alexandria, switching to green power is simple; you can sign up for Dominion Virginia Power’s VA Green Power program online or by phone. For as little as $2 a month you can help preserve the environment while strengthening the renewable energy economy, reducing carbon emissions, and encouraging independence from fossil fuels.
How does it work?
According to Dominion’s website, “When you sign up for Dominion Green Power, Dominion buys Green-e Energy certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) from renewable energy facilities on your behalf to guarantee that renewable energy is generated and delivered to the power pool in the amount specified.” In other words, purchasing green power diverts your dollars away from electricity produced by carbon-intensive coal factories and towards electricity generated by biomass, low-impact hydro, solar, and wind.
How much does it cost?
Customers who buy green power receive an additional charge of 1.5 cents ($0.015) per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which translates to about $15 per month for the average Virginia household. Dominion’s VA Green Power program allows customers to choose between two pricing options. Customers who choose the “100% Option” purchase an amount of renewable energy equivalent to their entire monthly electricity consumption, while those selecting the “Block Option” purchase renewable energy in 133 kWh blocks at a cost of 1.5¢/kWh above the standard rate, or $2.00 per block.
