Inmate Work Detail

Facility Services staff supervise the Inmate Work Detail, composed of carefully screened inmates who, under direct Deputy Sheriff supervision, complete public works projects that have included the beautification of Old Town, refuse collection at City roadways and highway interchanges, and school and playground clean up and repair. In 2013, the Work Detail performed 2,747 hours of service and saved the City approximately $75,000 in labor costs.

The Work Detail played an important role in the 2013 Litter Enforcement Month campaign sponsored by the Alice Ferguson Foundation by picking up litter across the City including along Mount Vernon Avenue, around Beatley Library, at the cemetery on North Breckinridge, in Hume Springs and in Four Mile Park. The Alice Ferguson Foundation recognized the City's efforts by presenting staff, including Deputy James Velez, with the Potomac Champion Award in October 2013.

The following are examples of work performed by the Inmate Work Detail

  • Neighborhood clean ups throughout the City
  • Landscaping/mulching - Old Town
  • Furniture moving at City Hall, Courthouse, and other City offices
  • Park cleans-ups at Chinquapin, Fort Ward and other City parks
  • Storm debris removal
  • Lawn care at City fire stations and the Public Safety Center
  • Landscaping/cleanup at Cora Kelly and George Mason Elementary Schools and Francis Hammond and George Washington Middle Schools
  • Painting of Gadsby light poles in Old Town
