Inmates Recognized for Educational Achievements

Sheriff Dana Lawhorne and his staff honored six inmates for their educational accomplishments during a graduation ceremony on Thursday, August 28, at the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center.

Sheriff Lawhorne joined education coordinator Krista Sofonia in presenting three inmates with Certificates of Achievement for passing their General Educational Development (GED) examinations. Roger Pinto-Vargas and two inmates who did not want their identities publicized wore caps and gowns and were applauded by staff, fellow inmates and family members attending the ceremony. Two other inmates also earned their GED this year but were released from the Alexandria jail before this event.

Three other inmates, Bradley Ashe, Dalaino Turner and Corie Yates, wore chef’s hats as they were recognized for earning their ServSafe® Food Protection Manager Certification. This locally and nationally recognized certification will make them more competitive candidates for restaurant and food service job opportunities. They completed an eight-hour training program and passed the examination on food safety regulations and concepts. Six other inmates released before the ceremony also earned ServSafe® certifications.
