Cambodian Festival 

City of Alexandria to Hold Annual Cambodian Community Day Festival
The City of Alexandria's Annual Cambodian Community Day Festival is scheduled for Sunday, August 24, from noon to 6 p.m. at Ben Brenman Park, 4800 Brenman Park Dr. Admission is free and the event will be held rain or shine. The theme for the festival is “Discover Cambodia.” Entertainment features the Cambodian Mohoree Music Ensemble, classical dances, folk dances, and the Stung Khiev band. Displays will showcase traditional arts and crafts, paintings, and souvenirs.

Alexandria Commission for the Arts Seeks Nominations for 2008 Alex Awards
The Alexandria Commission for the Arts is seeking nominations for the 2008 Alex Awards. The program recognizes individuals, organizations, schools, and businesses that have made exceptional contributions to cultural life in the City of Alexandria. All nominations must be submitted to the Durant Center, 1605 Cameron St., by 4 p.m. on Friday, September 19.

Second Annual Film Festival
The City of Alexandria will host its Second Annual Film Festival at the Lee Center’s Kauffman Auditorium (1108 Jefferson St.) from September 25 through September 28. This year’s Film Festival theme is “Politics in the USA,” featuring short films, features, and documentaries. The festival will also include a youth program component featuring junior filmmakers 18 and younger.

City Council Authorizes Plan for Design Competition To Develop Public Art Honoring Charles Houston
Art Will Be Displayed in Plaza of the Renovated Charles Houston Recreation Center
On Tuesday, June 24, the Alexandria City Council received a status report on the proposed public art honoring civil rights attorney Charles Houston, and authorized a plan to hold a design competition to select public art honoring Houston in the plaza of the renovated Charles Houston Recreation Center. The center is scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2009. The City Council authorized the City Manager to appoint a selection panel to oversee the design process for the public art.
