The Therapeutic Recreation Program is committed to providing innovative, inclusive, accessible and affordable recreation programs which enhance the health, well-being and quality of life for individuals with all abilities.

Online registration is not available for Therapeutic Recreation programs. TR program registration forms may be picked up from the Therapeutic Recreation Program Office. There is a $25 non-refundable registration fee that must be submitted at the time of registration

 


Therapeutic Recreation Summer Camps

2014 TR Flight 2014 - TR is flying into summer! 

  • Teenie Weenie Toddler Camp 

Ages 3-5. Participants engage in outdoor swimming, arts and crafts, storytime, dance and movement, sensory time exploration and special events. Min 6 / Max 12.

  • Camp Kaleidoscope

 Therapeutic Recreation Youth and Teen Programs 

  • Mainstream After-School Program 

Ages 6-17. Participants will enjoy various recreational activities designed to promote community integration. Programs are for children with or without disabilities.

  • Little Dippers After-School Program 

Ages 6-11. Participants engage in swimming, arts and crafts, games, sports, exercise, cooking, field trips and much more! These after-school activities increase physical fitness, independence and self-confidence.

  • Kids’ Day Out 2013TRPicture5 

Ages 6-17. Designed to provide recreation and respite care for youth with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities. This program includes arts and crafts, games, sports, exercise, field trips, life skills and opportunities for socialization. Program will be held on scheduled ACPS teacher work days. Before and After Care services available upon request. Min 6 / Max 18.

  • Sensory Time Exploration Program (STEP) 

The STEP program provides opportunities for parent-child interaction and physical/occupational therapy in the multi-sensory room. The program is geared towards children with sensory and/or developmental disabilities. The multi-sensory includes Aroma Therapy, Interactive Bubble Columns, Ladder Lights, Leaf Chair, Fiber Optic Lights and a Tactile Wall. Ages 12-17. Teens engage in life skills and social skills activities as well as swimming, arts and crafts, games, sports, exercise, cooking and field trips. These after-school activities increase physical fitness, independence and social and life skills.

  • Adult Social Club 

Ages 18 & up. Adults with physical, cognitive or developmental disabilities develop leisure interests, awareness and life skills through program outings, activities and special events. Activities are planned by participants as a group. Activity fees are additional.

  • Art Works 

Ages 18 & up. Let your creative side shine through while using a variety of art mediums and learning new art skills in an environmental which also promotes socialization and sharing ideas with peers.

Therapeutic Recreation Sports Programs 

  • TOP Soccer 

Ages 5-18. Coordinated through the Alexandria Soccer Association, this program is a basic skill-building program that focuses on team participation and having fun. Youth with and without disabilities as well as adults are eligible to participate. This program starts in April and September.
Su    2-3:15 p.m.              LEE (Miracle Field)

  • Miracle Baseball League 

Ages 5 & up. Coordinated through the Sports Division, this program is a basic skill-building program that is non-competitive and fun. Youth with and without disabilities are eligible attend. This program starts in April and September.

 Volunteer Opportunities 2013TRPicture2 

  • Volunteer Instructor Program – VIP
    Volunteers have an opportunity to work with younger children while under the supervision of a Therapeutic Recreation Leader while conducting programs. For more information, call 703.746.5422.

 


Therapeutic Recreation Advisory Board

  • The Therapeutic Recreation Advisory Council meets quarterly on Monday evenings, 5:30 p.m. at the Lee Center. For more information, call 703.746.5422.

 


Services and Transportation

  • The Department has adopted the L.I.F.E., Leisure Is For Everyone, philosophy, and the Department complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). ADA accommodations may include, but are not limited to, furnishing assistive listening devices, providing sign language interpreters and meeting with an instructor or staff prior to the start of an activity, class or event to discuss any concerns. To ensure the requested accommodation, please notify the specific facility where the program is provided at least four weeks in advance. DOT Para Transit Service and Metro Access provide specialized transportation services for area residents with disabilities.
