City of Alexandria Reduces King Street Tree Lighting Program (released June 14, 2010)
the King Street Tree Lighting Program will be limited to the holiday season, and the street trees on King Street were turned off on the weekend of June 12 and 13. The lights will be turned back on for the holiday season beginning November 2010, and will remain on through January 2011. More information….
Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities Announces New Fees for Fiscal Year 2011 (released June 10, 2010)
Effective July 1, 2010, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will increase fees for Field Rentals, Garden Plot Rentals, Youth Sports Registration, and Youth Sports Field Use Fees. In addition, the Department will establish an Adult Fitness Fee for fitness room use. More information ....
City of Alexandria Film Festival Seeks Entries (released June 10, 2010)
The fourth annual Alexandria Film Festival, scheduled for November 4-7, is soliciting entries from U.S. and international filmmakers. Three cash prizes will be awarded to top films at the Festival: Best of Show ($500), Jury Prize ($300) and Audience Award ($200). Accepted film genres include narrative features, documentaries, shorts, and animation. Deadlines for entries are: Early Bird Deadline: July 15; Regular Deadline: August 1; and Late Deadline: August 15. Regular fees are $35 for feature-length films and $25 for shorts. Discounts are available for those who enter by the Early Bird Deadline; late fees apply to those who enter by the Late Deadline. More information….

The 10th Annual Arlandria-Chirilagua Festival is scheduled for Sunday, June 13, from noon to 7 p.m. at 3700 Commonwealth Ave. Admission fee required, and advance discount ticket sales are available. The festival will be held rain or shine. More information....

A new reader poll conducted by AmericanStyle Magazine ranks Alexandria third among the nation’s best arts destinations. Rising from an 11th place ranking last year, Alexandria beat out the 2009 winner, Chattanooga, Tennessee, as well as perennial favorites Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina. Memorial Day Ceremony to Honor 67 Alexandrians KIA/MIA in the Vietnam War (released May 20, 2010)
The “Friends of Captain Rocky Versace” invite the public to the 8th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 31 at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center at 2701 Commonwealth Ave. The event will honor the 67 Alexandrians who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War. City of Alexandria Announces Finalists for Charles Hamilton Houston Memorial (released May 20, 2010)
The Alexandria Commission for the Arts and the Office of the Arts announce the four artists who have been selected as finalists for the Charles Hamilton Houston Memorial. The final four emerged from a talented pool of nearly 60 applicants from 23 states who responded to a widely promoted “Call to Artists.” The Memorial will be located at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St. The winning artist will be announced in the fall. Alexandria Beautification Commission Seeks Nominations for the 2010 Alexandria Beautification Awards (released April 28, 2010)
The City of Alexandria’s Beautification Commission is accepting nominations for the 2010 Alexandria Beautification Awards. The awards program recognizes City residents, organizations, and businesses for their efforts in contributing to the beautification of City neighborhoods and public vistas with landscaping and aesthetic design. City of Alexandria Names Amy Young as New Poet Laureate (released April 23, 2010)
The City of Alexandria announces the appointment of Amy A. Young as the new Poet Laureate. Young, a resident of Alexandria, has read, studied, and written poetry since she was a child growing up in Washington, DC. For the last 11 years, she has led the Writer’s Lab for 11- and 12-year-olds with learning disabilities at the Lab School of Washington. She also has taught writing workshops for learning disabled adults. Young has studied poetry in George Mason University’s Master of Fine Arts program and has been trained to lead intensive writing workshops for people from a variety of backgrounds. More information….

City of Alexandria Observes Days of Remembrance for Victims of Holocaust (released March 30, 2010)
The City of Alexandria will observe the Days of Remembrance, Yom HaShoah, for the victims of the Holocaust on Tuesday, April 13, at noon on Market Square, 301 King St. Alexandria City Council hosts the annual ceremony as part of the weeklong commemoration of the national Days of Remembrance, Sunday, April 11, through Sunday, April 18. This is the 23rd consecutive year the City has held the Days of Remembrance ceremony, which is free and open to the public. More information....

The City’s Alexandria’s Urban Forestry Steering Committee (UFSC) and the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will hold a tree sale on Saturday, April 24, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the City’s Annual Earth day Program at Ben Brenman Park, 4800 Brenman Park Dr. The goal of the sale is to promote the preservation of the Alexandria’s tree canopy by encouraging the planting of trees on private property throughout the City. The Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission will hold a retreat on Saturday, March 6 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Community Room at the Station at Potomac Yard, 650 Maskell Street. City of Alexandria Purchases Henry Street Property to Develop Park (released February 17, 2010)
On February 16, City Council authorized City Manager James K. Hartmann to sign a contract for acquisition of the property at 600 North Henry Street. The City’s purchase of this half-acre property is the first step to successful implementation of the Braddock Metro Neighborhood Plan’s open space recommendation for a park in the area. The purchase price is $2.4 million and the City will use dedicated open space funds to acquire the property. More information….

Due to the current conditions and ongoing snow removal efforts, City of Alexandria government facilities, including all recreation centers, will remain closed on Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14. In addition, all recreation programs and activities are cancelled.
