Youth Sports
General Information
The Youth Sports Office is currently seeking volunteers to coach youth baseball, softball, swimming, track and field, football, basketball, cheerleading and volleyball. Criminal background checks are required by all volunteer coaches. Coaches are provided training opportunities. Registration forms for sports leagues may be obtained through Alexandria Schools, Libraries, Recreation Centers, and the Youth Sports Office at 1108 Jefferson St. Fees and programs are subject to change. Registration for all Youth Sport leagues and activities must be accompanied by a birth certificate.

Volunteers Needed

Volunteer coaches are required to attend the National Youth Sports Coaches Alliance (NYSCA) certification clinic.

National Youth Sports Coaches Alliance (NYSCA)
The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities sponsors the National Youth Sports Alliance coaches certification program. NYSCA provides volunteer youth coaches with valuable information on the psychology of coaching children, first aid, safety, how to organize fun and interesting practices, maximizing athletic performance, tips on teaching sports techniques, how to help children to avoid drugs as well as many other important areas.
To become an NYSCA member, coaches must pass a written test on the material presented during the clinic and sign the Coaches’ Code of Ethics pledge, which stresses the importance of placing the emotional and physical well-being of players ahead of personal desire to win. Mid-Atlantic Recreation and Parks Sports Alliance (MARPSA)
The City of Alexandria along with a number of other local jurisdictions is a proud member of the MARPSA organization. The purpose of the MARPSA is to develop and communicate a consistent message that organizations and their players, coaches and spectators will be held accountable to a code of conduct that promotes sportsmanship and keeps recreational competitive and non-competitive sporting activities in proper prospective.
- Mid-Atlantic Recreation and Parks Sports Alliance GoodSport Awards
The annual Mid-Atlantic Recreation and Parks Sports Alliance GoodSport Awards Ceremony is held in February each year at the Maryland State House in Annapolis. The event includes a reception co-hosted by the Alliance and the Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, followed by recognition of all recipients at the evenings General Assembly session.
Players, coaches and parents are required to complete a Code of Conduct Form before participating in the any youth sports program in Alexandria.
Pursuing Victory With Honor Sportsmanship Campaign
The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities and the Alexandria Chapter of 4-H has implemented a Character Counts/Pursuing Victory With Honor Program. The purpose of the program is for students-athletes to increase their knowledge and skills in character education, including trust, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship, both on and off the playing field.

Alexandria Titans Youth Tackle Football Program (Ages 7-16)
Teams are formed in Anklebiter, 75, 85, 95, 110, 125 & 150 pound weight categories. Practices will begin in August with league play beginning in September. Teams participate in the Fairfax County Youth Football League (FCYFL). Current Virginia DMV I.D. required for players. The Alexandria Titans Youth Football Program Results
On Saturday, November 14, the Alexandria Titans Youth Football program hosted four championship football games at Parker-Gray Memorial Stadium. Seven of 13 Titan teams made the Fairfax County Youth Football League playoffs this season and three teams reached the finals.

Youth Boys & Girls Basketball League (Ages 7-17)
Registration Information: Teams are formed in the 8, 10, 12, 14 and 17 & under leagues. League play begins January 2010. League age is determined by the age of the participant as of March 31, 2010. Teams in the 14 & 17 under divisions will be formed by skill assessment.
Registration Period: 9/15 – 11/15

Coed Youth Basketball Fundamentals School (Ages 5-10)

Registration Information: Six (6) Saturday classes Nov 1 - Dec 13 (No class 11/22). Classes are offered for one and one-half hours. Age is determined by the age of the participant as of December 31, 2009.
Registration Period: 9/15 - 10/24

Youth Cheerleading Program (Ages 5-16)
Registration Information: Learn the basic cheerleading skills and techniques. Teams are formed at the neighborhood recreation and afterschool centers in the developmental, junior varsity and varsity levels. Age is determined by the age of the participant as of April 30, 2010.
Registration Period: 8/1 – 9/7
Fee: Nominal charges will be assessed.

Youth Girl's Volleyball Leagues (Ages 10-14)
Registration Information: Leagues are designed to develop the basic fundamentals and further the development of the skilled players. Teams will be formed based on the number of participants registered and by experience. Practice and games begin in September. League age is determined by the age of the participant as of December 31, 2009.
Registration Period: 8/1 - 9/5.

31st Annual Citywide Cheerleading Exhibition

The exhibition features cheerleading squads from Charles Barrett, Charles Houston, Cora Kelly, Mt. Vernon, Nannie J. Lee, Patrick Henry and William Ramsay.
Advance Tickets: $5 ages 13 & older, $2 ages 6-12, and Free ages 5 & under
Door Tickets: $6 ages 13 & older, $3 ages 6-12, and Free ages 5 & under
Advance tickets are available the neighborhood recreation centers and Youth Sports Office.

Titans Youth Track & Field Club (Ages 7-14)
The track club will represent the City of Alexandria and complete in local track meets held around the metropolitan area June - August. Club members will receive the basic skills and techniques of track and field with the emphasis placed on teamwork, sportsmanship, commitment and healthy competition. Hershey’s Track & Field Youth Program (Ages 7-14)
Winners can advance through District, Regional, State and National Competitions. Participants can register at any City Recreation Center. The local track and field meet will be held in May. Youth compete in the 50, 100, 200, 400, meter dash, 800 and 1600 meter run, 4 x 100 relay, Softball Throw and Standing Long Jump. Please Note: 7 & 8 year olds will not advance beyond the Citywide event. For additional information call 703.746.5402.

Wahoo Youth Swim Team Program (Ages 6-18)
The Wahoo Swim Program offers youth of all abilities the opportunity to develop their own unique potential. The program will promote individual achievement and team camaraderie in an atmosphere of friendly competition. Developing and experienced swimmers alike can refine their freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke butterfly, turns and starts with an experienced coaching staff. Swim meets are scheduled every Saturday morning from mid-June through early August. Participants will attend practices at Old Town Pool. Swimmers must be able to swim 25 meters (1 lap) continuously. Youth Non-Contact Rugby Program Boys and Girls Ages (6-14)
The non-contact rugby program is designed to incorporate the basic rugby skills of running, passing, team support and decision making in a physically safe and non-threatening environment. The program will be run in conjunction with Alexandria Rugby, Inc. a community based non-profit organization. For additional information call 703.746.5402.

National Junior Tennis League Youth Tennis Program (Ages 8-18) 
This National Junior Tennis League (NJTL) program has classes that are formed for beginners to advanced. Tennis matches and tournaments are held between participants of the same skill level. Program operates: mid June through July. For additional information call 703.746.5402.

Youth Boxing Program
Ages 8-17 - Alexandria Boxing Club, Inc. Learn basic boxing skills. The boxing program consists of training in eight disciplines, and all necessary equipment is provided. Registrations are accepted Mon Fri, 6 8 pm at the Fred Smith Boxing Center, 2504 Oakville Street. Parental permission required.
