Potomac Yard Metrorail Implementation Work Group (PYMIG)

The City of Alexandria’s Potomac Yard Metrorail Implementation Group (PYMIG) will hold a meeting on Monday, June 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at City Hall (301 King St.) in the Council Workroom. The public is invited to the meeting to learn about the proposed Potomac Yard Metrorail Station, the environmental planning process, and the station alternatives that are being proposed.

City of Alexandria Starts Construction on Crystal City/Potomac Yard Transitway Tuesday, July 31, 2012

The City of Alexandria starts construction on the first segment of the Crystal City/Potomac Yard Transitway Tuesday, July 31, 2012.  The project will upgrade a 0.8 mile segment of Route 1 between Potomac Avenue and East Glebe Road to include dedicated transit-only lanes, signal prioritization for transit, and enhanced passenger amenities.  The project is part of a five-mile planned transit corridor between Braddock Road and Pentagon City Metrorail stations. The project is being delivered as part of a design-build contract, scheduled for completion in December 2013. Initially, Route 1 Transitway will offer higher frequency and more reliable service, as well as additional transit capacity. The project supports the City's Eco-City Alexandria initiative by providing residents, workers and visitors alternatives to single occupancy vehicles.

Route 1 Transitway Stations Design Concept Public Meeting was held on June 14, 2012 at Cora Kelly Recreation Center Gym.  The meeting focused on the vertical elements of the station including the shelter, fare collection devices, next bus technology, benches, trash receptacles, etc, and allow for public input into the location of items as well as the look and feel of the Bus Rapid Transit Stations on Route 1 between Potomac Avenue and East Glebe Road.  An update on the BRT design and construction was also given.

Several transportation projects related to bus rapid transit and improvements for pedestrian, bicyclist, and motorist connections are underway in the Potomac Yard Development area.

  • Route 1 Transitway Project:
A design/build project is currently underway to design and construct exclusive transit lanes in the median of Route 1 between Potomac Avenue and East Glebe Road. In the ultimate configuration of the transitway, buses will operate between Pentagon City Metrorail and Braddock Road Metrorail stations in both exclusive and mixed-use lanes through Arlington County and the City of Alexandria.
  • Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements:
Both along Route 1 and within Landbay K, bicycle and pedestrian improvements are included. Learn more about the amenities here.
  • Motorist Improvements:
The Potomac Yard developers are reconstructing the northbound lanes, from Potomac Avenue to East Glebe Road on Route 1 to the east, allowing for the existing northbound lanes to be utilized as the bus rapid transit (BRT) lanes. The reconstruction of the northbound lanes between Potomac Avenue and East Glebe Road is currently under construction and anticipated to be completed by late 2012.
  • Route 1 Streetcar Conversion Project:
In the future, the Route 1 BRT (also know as the CCPY Transitway in its entirety) may be converted to streetcar use.  An alternative analysis and environmental assessment (AA/EA) is currently underway under the direction of the City of Alexandria and Arlington County.  A Policy Committee and Technical Committee are currently being formed for this project.  Documents will be provided as they become available.
