Podcasting is a method of publishing audio programs via the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a "feed" of new audio files (usually MP3s). To subscribe to podcasts, you need "podcatching" software (also called a podcast reader or aggregator), which periodically checks for and downloads new content automatically. The most popular podcasting software is the free iTunes. Once you download a podcast, you can listen to it on your computer or copy it onto your iPod or other portable music player. Although podcast combines the words "iPod" and "broadcast," it does not require an Apple iPod.
The City of Alexandria was one of the first local governments in the United States to use podcasting to reach new audiences. We're working on new ideas all the time, and we'd love to hear yours at podcasts@alexandriava.gov.
