Temporary Portable Sign Pilot Program 

The current Temporary Portable Sign Program is slated to expire November 1, 2009.  In October, City Council will consider an ordinance to extend the program until June 30, 2011 or implementation of the Wayfinding Design Guidelines, whichever is sooner.  The proposed ordinance will go to City Council on October 17 for introduction and first reading (docket item #18, see below for link) and on October 27 for public hearing, second reading and adoption. 


Program Information

On November 25, 2008 the Alexandria City Council voted to adopt an ordinance to establish a pilot program to allow temporary portable signs for restaurant and retail-oriented businesses in the Central Business District (Old Town), not located on King Street.  (For additional information regarding eligibility and sign location, please see staff report, below).      


Permit Application Checklist

Please submit permit applications to Richard Bray in the Permit Center on the 4th Floor of City Hall.  Complete applications will include the following items:

  • Sign specification plans (showing size, text, materials, colors and method of installation)
  • Photo or plan showing sign location
  • Completed and signed permit application form pages 1-4
    • application
    • list of participating businesses
    • signed regulations
    • certification of invitation to eligible businesses
