Alexandrians with mental disabilities have a friend in us.

Mission: To support Alexandrians with mental disabilities and their families
through advocacy, education and fund-raising to meet emergency,
vocational and social needs.

Tax-dollars can never meet all of the critical needs of people with mental illness, mental retardation, and substance dependency. Since 1984 FRIENDS OF THE ALEXANDRIA MENTAL HEALTH CENTER, a not-for-profit group of resident-volunteers, has worked with other City organizations to assist the City’s Mental Health Center clients, many of who have limited incomes and have no family or friends to help them in an emergency with such needs as:

Rent support to avoid eviction and late fees

Minor medical, dental, and pharmaceutical expenses

Transportation

Food, clothing, bedding and toiletries

Utility bills

Quality of life activities

Educational materials and programs

When City staff request emergency funding for Alexandria Mental Health Center consumers, FRIENDS responds. Every year FRIENDS raises money through a fund-drive and community events to help members of this vulnerable population.
