Our volunteer program offers a variety of opportunities. You may work directly with consumers of our services, in our offices, on a committee or even in your own home. All volunteers are provided with an orientation and training. Please contact 703-746-3484 for more information.

Volunteer Positions
Friendly Visitors - Visit an adult with intellectual disability who lives in a group home and plan leisure activities together. Visits are one-to-one. Two hours per week. One year commitment requested.
Representative Payee - Volunteer from home! Manage the funds of a person with disabilities. Open a bank account and receive automatic monthly deposits of social security benefits which are used to pay a consumer’s bills. There are few monthly transactions. Most consumers have three bills or less each month. After registering with the Social Security Administration and opening the account, this volunteer job requires less than two hours per month per consumer account. One year commitment requested.
Mentors - Meet with a student at Essex House or Brent Place once a week in a supervised group setting. Help the student, for whom English may be a second language, to feel more confident in school and improve his/her grades. Provide friendship, act as a positive role model and, if possible, participate in leisure and recreational activities with the child.
Administrative/Clerical Assistant - Work as a receptionist, medical record assistant, or in another administrative support capacity. Four hours per week or more. Three month commitment requested.
Leadership Opportunities
Serve as a member of one of the following groups:
- Friends of the Alexandria Mental Health Center
- Local Human Rights Committee
The LHRC is seeking consumers of CSB services, family members of consumers or other Alexandrians. The LHRC reviews complaints of consumer rights violations filed by or on behalf of consumers of the Alexandria CSB. The LHRC also reviews existing policies and practices upon request, and makes recommendations regarding procedures that affect the rights of consumers. Members are approved by the state and serve a 3-year term. The LHRC meets in the evening on the third Wednesday of each month. Requires three hours per month.
