Prevention and Early Intervention Services
We offer Alexandrians educational programs and activities designed to promote mental health, good parenting and addiction-free lifestyles.
For in-school programs that discourage smoking, sex and substance abuse, or help students manage anger and avoid violence, call 703-746-3600 and ask to speak to a member of the prevention staff.
For Parent Infant Education activities that teach parenting skills and aid in healthy infant and toddler development, call 703-746-3350.
For community presentations on topics related to mental health, mental retardation or drug and alcohol use, call 703-746-3473.
MANY PROGRAMS AND SERVICES ARE OFFERED IN SPANISH.
The following are examples of the Prevention programs and activities we offer:
- Stress management and anger management workshops for teens and adults
- Parenting classes for fathers at the juvenile and adult detention centers
- Ready-Set-Grow to help foreign-born adults and their children cope with adjustment
- Kids are Terrific Camp to teach 8-12 year-olds about health, hygiene, and resisting negative peer pressure
- Peer Mediation Training to teach 6th, 7th and 8th graders to mediate disagreements among peers
- Life Skills Training to teach 1st through 12th graders skills for a healthy life
- Second Step Violence Prevention Program to help middle school children develop skills in anger management, impulse control and problem solving
- Promoting Alternative Thinking (PATHS) to help 6 and 7 year olds improve their thinking skills
- Court Service Unit Alcohol Diversion Program to teach adolescent first offenders about the harmful effects of alcohol
- HIV/AIDS Outreach Program to provide education and referral services
