The Clubhouse was established in 1985 to offer day support and vocational training for City residents with psychiatric disabilities. Participation in Clubhouse activities is voluntary for its members. Participants are referred to as members, not clients or patients, thereby emphasizing their active roles in running the Clubhouse. Clubhouse programs are member-driven. All activities are planned, organized and executed by the members. In essence, the Clubhouse program is the treatment. Participation is on an informal, drop-in basis allowing for non-coercive, flexible attendance without formal commitment. Gradually, participants may choose to move on to more structured, goal-oriented activities. Clubhouse Purpose The purpose of the Clubhouse is to foster a caring, respectful and supportive environment; to create a place where members can structure their days with meaningful activities in three work units. The Clubhouse promotes vocational readiness and assists in the development of healthy interpersonal skills. The goal is for each member to achieve and maintain the highest level of independence possible. Member Work Units The Clubhouse has three work units that encompass the operations of the Clubhouse. Each member chooses to belong to a particular work unit, which reflects his or her interests and skills. These units meet daily, and members choose the tasks they will perform that day. Services available to Clubhouse members through the Clubhouse:
The Community Services Board does charge a fee for these services. A negotiated payment plan is available. However, no Alexandrian is denied service because of inability to pay. To visit our program or learn more about the Clubhouse, call the Clubhouse Coordinator at 703-746-3456. |
