City Hosts Third Community Meeting on Waterfront Landscape and Flood Mitigation Design Project

On Tuesday, January 21, the City will hold the third in a series of community meetings on the Waterfront Landscape and Flood Mitigation Design project.  This meeting, scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., will be held in the George Washington Middle School Cafeteria (1005 Mt. Vernon Ave.). Attendees should use entrance #6, located off the parking lot in the rear of the building.  The meeting will provide a forum for the public to share its input through comments and a survey, on draft refinements, by The Olin Studio, to the illustrative design for the Waterfront in the approved Waterfront Small Area Plan.

Health Department Concludes Record Mosquito Control Season

Last year’s wet spring and summer weather brought out extraordinary numbers of mosquitoes in Alexandria. Mosquito-borne illness surveillance by the Alexandria Health Department trapped, identified and tested a record 39,588 mosquitoes for West Nile virus. 61 of 885 pools of mosquitoes from 12 different locations in the city tested positive for West Nile virus. Despite the aggressive application of eco-friendly larvicides and public outreach, there was still a human West Nile Virus encephalitis case. In addition to field surveillance, laboratory analyses and larvicide application, the Vector Control Program also responded to 30 resident complaints about mosquito nuisances.

Temporary Closure of Alexandria Health Department and Northern Virginia Region Women, Infant and Children Offices

All Alexandria Health Department and Northern Virginia Women, Infant and Children (WIC) offices and services will be closed from January 27 to January 31.  The offices are being closed due to training for the state’s conversion to a new electronic WIC system. Clients and vendors have notified and signs will be posted for walk-in clients. In addition, a contingency plan is in place in the event of unanticipated emergency WIC services.

City of Alexandria Recognized for Increased Floodplain Management Practices

The City of Alexandria was recently recognized for exceeding the goals of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS), administrated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The CRS is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed minimum NFIP requirements. Previously rated a Class 7, Alexandria is now the first and only Virginia locality to achieve a Class 6 rating, the lowest in the state. As a result, residents and businesses purchasing flood insurance for properties in Alexandria are now eligible to receive up to a 20% discount on flood insurance premiums. According to NFIP statistics, nationwide, only 305 participating communities currently hold a Class 6 rating or better; as of October 31, 2013, only one out of 1,420 participating communities achieved a Class 1 rating.
