City Manager Announces New Department of Project Implementation

On Wednesday, July 31, Alexandria City Manager Rashad Young announced the creation of the Department of Project Implementation, and his selection of Emily Baker, P.E., as its Director. As part of the City’s efforts to improve government performance for residents and businesses, and to better align our work with the City’s strategic plans and goals, this new department will be charged with the implementation of City infrastructure capital projects. The Department of Project Implementation will largely originate from the Engineering and Construction Management sections of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) and will be responsible for engineering, contracting, and overseeing the construction of City-owned infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, sewers, and more.

Charles M. Goodman House Listed on National Register of Historic Places

On May 28, the United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service, formally listed the Charles M. Goodman House, 510 North Quaker Lane, on the National Register of Historic Places.  The house and property, owned by Michael Wayne and Karen Ongley, was listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register on March 21.  The nomination was written by Dr. Margaret Grubiak, a resident of Del Ray and professor at Villanova University, and coordinated by Alexandria Board of Architectural Review (BAR) staff.  The state review boards commended Alexandria’s continued dedication to historic preservation and noted this house as an outstanding example of modern residential architecture.  The state and national register listings are honorific and do not prohibit demolition or alteration of a structure; however, staff expects to bring nominations to City Council to add this building, as well as Alexandria Union Station, to the City’s 100 Year Old Building list later this year.

Health Department Pharmacy Dispenses More than 12,000 Prescriptions

The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) operates the Casey Health Center Pharmacy, serving AHD’s prenatal patients, and Alexandria Neighborhood Health Center, Inc. (ANHSI) patients seen by ANHSI at the Casey Health Center. The pharmacy provides critically needed medications to many of the City’s most vulnerable, uninsured/underinsured, low-income residents with a variety of illnesses and chronic medical conditions. In Fiscal Year 2013, more than 12,500 prescriptions were dispensed. Approximately 30 percent were for AHD prenatal patients, HIV medications and other AHD clinics, and 70 percent were for ANHSI patients. Most medications are low cost (90-day quantities for $5 or $10). In Fiscal Year 2013, HIV medications dispensed had a retail value of $830,000 (HIV and other pharmaceuticals are funded through non-City sources, such as federal grants). The pharmacy also assists patients to obtain free medications through the pharmaceutical manufacturers’ patient assistance programs: this represented approximately 10 percent of the total pharmacy prescription volume in Fiscal Year 2013.
