Alexandria Library Launches Summer Reading Programs

SummerQuest, Alexandria Library's children’s summer reading program, will launch on Monday, June 17. The program, which can help improve a child’s literacy skills when school is out of session, allows children between 6 and 12 years old to participate in a reading challenge by tracking the books that they read when they sign up for SummerQuest online. Those who read a minimum of 10 books will receive a prize. Children up to 5 years old can register for SummerQuest Jr. to receive an early literacy, color activity sheet. A variety of children's performers will entertain with storytelling, music, science, magic and more during the program. Alexandria Library challenges teenagers to read five books or more, and participants’ names will be entered in a drawing to win one of four prizes.

Planning and Zoning Creates Historic District Web App

Historic Preservation Staff obtained grant funding last year from the National Park Service, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (VDHR), the Historic Alexandria Foundation, and Environmental Systems Research Institute, to create an architectural survey field collection app for the Old and Historic Alexandria Historic District. This national pilot project is utilizing more than 60 trained local volunteers to survey the District in five annual phases. The volunteers will conduct the survey using grant-funded tablet computers linked to City servers, which host the web app. Board of Architectural Review staff have worked closely with City GIS staff and GIS, Inc., a consultant, to launch a beta-version of the web app last month. Volunteers photographed all 500 of the Phase 1 resources in the spring, which are being cataloged by an intern. Additional volunteers are now in the field identifying architectural features. This phase will be complete and submitted to VDHR by August.
