Potomac Yard Residents Volunteer for Rooftop Gardening Program

Alexandria Housing Development Corporation is partnering with Rooftop Roots, a local nonprofit urban gardening group which seeks to make fresh foods more accessible to low income persons, to plant vegetables in bucket gardens on a portion of the terrace at The Station at Potomac Yard.   Led by Rooftop Roots volunteers, residents of The Station will be involved in helping to plant, maintain, monitor and harvest the vegetables.  Vegetables grown at The Station will be donated to the Alexandrians Involved Ecumenically (ALIVE!) food pantry.  The first planting day is scheduled on Saturday, April 13.  The three collaborating nonprofits are very excited to be launching the first Alexandria program.

Bike Corral Installed at Unit Block of King Street

On April 4, the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) removed one parking space at the foot of King Street and installed Old Town’s first public bicycle parking corral.  Five racks were installed in front of Mai Thai Restaurant and will provide parking for ten bicycles.   This project was developed as part of the Union Street Corridor Study, which called for more bicycle parking along Union Street.

Virginia American Water Begins Annual Hydrant Flushing

On April 7, Virginia American Water will begin its annual hydrant flushing in the City of Alexandria and Prince William County.  The system flush is part of the company’s yearly maintenance program to improve water service by flushing, or removing, mineral deposits and sediment from water mains. Flushing will be performed Sunday evenings through Friday mornings between 8:30 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. from April 7 until approximately May 24. During the flushing work, crews will open the fire hydrants and allow them to flow freely for a short period of time.

Spring2ACTion Prepares for Annual Fundraising Blitz

On April 17, more than 90 of Alexandria’s nonprofit organizations are enlisting the community to raise money for local causes during Spring2ACTion, a 24-hour online giving drive. Also known as Alexandria’s Giving Day, Spring2ACTion, hosted by ACT for Alexandria and ACTion Alexandria, is one extraordinary day to support the organizations that provide critical services to tens of thousands of people throughout Alexandria. A donation of just $10 can help your favorite nonprofits keep up with local needs. Since its inception in 2011, Spring2ACTion has helped Alexandria nonprofits raise more than $420,000 to support new and existing programs.

DASH Comprehensive Operations Analysis: Update

The City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Transit Company (ATC) are co-managing the DASH Comprehensive Operations Analysis.  The purpose of the analysis, which began in 2012, is to perform a comprehensive evaluation of the current DASH network and service market to identify service improvements and route expansion that will increase connectivity and accessibility and improve the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of the DASH fixed route transit system. The consultant team, TMD, Inc., is holding stakeholder meetings with various commissions, the business community, City and ATC staff, and others to gather input on needs for the system.  In addition, during April, TMD will conduct ridership counts at every DASH bus stop on every trip of all DASH routes, non-rider telephone surveys, and on-board rider surveys to gather information that will be used in developing recommendations. The project is anticipated to be completed in late 2013. For more information visit:

City Expands Carshare Program

On January 22, City Council adopted a pilot on-street carshare policy, which allows the City to lease on-street parking spaces to qualified and interested carsharing companies.  The first two on-street carsharing spaces are located on Ballenger Avenue in the Carlyle neighborhood.  Carsharing is a short-term vehicle rental model. It is a component of Local Motion’s overall effort to promote multimodal transportation options and enhance mobility throughout the City. Individuals can become members of a carsharing service by paying a flat annual fee and reserve a car for hourly use via internet or phone.
