Washington Street Streetscape Project Meeting - Thursday, March 21

The City of Alexandria's Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) will begin construction work later this month to make improvements to the S. Washington Street Right-Of-Way, from Church Street to Gibbon Street. The proposed improvements are intended as infrastructure streetscape improvements that will aesthetically mitigate the impact of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge (WWB) construction and Urban Deck. The scope of this project includes enhancements to lighting, sidewalk, streetscape, traffic safety, and drainage improvements.  A project meeting will take place on Thursday, March 21 from 7 to 9 p.m., at Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy, 503 S. Saint Asaph St. For more information about this project visit:

T&ES Maintenance Focuses on Pothole Repairs

As the first day of spring approaches and the weather starts to become warmer, the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) will start repairing the wear and tear of City streets that occurred during the winter months. In 2012, crews repaired approximately 1,100 potholes throughout the City, and this year T&ES crews have already begun aggressively repairing damaged streets.  A typical repair consists of digging out any loose material and installing a permanent hot asphalt patch. When the weather doesn't allow for a permanent repair, a cold mix material is used for a temporary patch, followed by a permanent repair later in the season.  Residents are encouraged to report potholes by using Call.Click.Connect. or by calling 703.746.HELP (4357).

Registration Now Open for Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 17

The City's Local Motion program, Commuter Connections, and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) invite thousands of area commuters to celebrate bicycling as a clean, fun and healthy way to get to work.  Save the date and register now for the City's Bike to Work Day celebration on Friday, May 17.  The City plans to host three pit stops again this year: City Hall, Carlyle, and Mark Center.  Over the years, Bike to Work Day has grown steadily, and now hundreds of thousands of bicyclists across the country take to the streets each spring as part of a nationwide campaign to encourage this healthy and safe alternative to solo driving.  In the Metropolitan Washington region alone, Bike to Work Day has grown from a small group of a few hundred in 2001 to over 12,000 participants in 2012.

Health Department Seeks National Accreditation

The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is seeking nationally recognized accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). The PHAB accreditation program, developed over a ten-year period and launched in September 2011, is jointly supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with the objective of enhancing the quality and performance of public health departments. PHAB recently awarded the five-year accreditation to the first 11 public health departments in the United States. AHD, with the approval and support of the Virginia Department of Health, has started the 18-month project of reviewing and assuring conformance with PHAB's accreditation domains and measures with plans to submit its application in summer 2014. Seeking accreditation is consistent with AHD's values of 'Working Together – Improving Continuously – Making a Difference,' and with the City of Alexandria's guiding principles of 'leadership and ownership,' and 'service excellence.'

Alexandria Participates in Northern Virginia Housing Expo

The City of Alexandria will participate in the third annual Northern Virginia Housing Expo on March 16 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School, 7930 Leesburg Pike, in the City of Falls Church.  The first Northern Virginia Housing Expo, held in 2011 at the City of Alexandria's T.C. Williams High School, was named 'Best Government Initiative' by the Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers in 2012.  Showcasing both homeownership and rental opportunities and resources throughout Northern Virginia, the Expo features workshops and exhibits designed to educate attendees about all aspects of buying or renting a home.  Classes tailored to seniors interested in adapting their homes to facilitate aging in place, as well as a new workshop on reverse mortgages are new at this year's show.
