City Issues Request for Proposals for Sale of Surplus City Property at 1505 Powhatan Street

The City of Alexandria is seeking responses to a Request for Proposals for the sale and redevelopment of 1505 Powhatan Street. This 1-acre property was the site of the City’s former traffic and sign shop at the corner of Slaters Lane, near the Bernard Street/Powhatan Street intersection. The City has designated this property as surplus and seeks private development offers to redevelop with compatible neighborhood uses that enhance this important gateway site. The deadline for proposals is October 1.

Office of Housing Named as Virginia Housing Development Authority Community Agent

The City’s Office of Housing has been designated as a Community Agent for the Virginia Housing Development Authority’s Rental Unit Modification Program. This program, which offers up to $2,000 in grant funds to assist low- and moderate income renters in modifying their homes to improve accessibility, requires that applications for assistance be submitted by a designated Community Agent. This program may be used in concert with the existing Mini-Grant Program administered by the City. In addition to these programs, the City also offers a Rental Accessibility Modification Program, which provides grants of up to $50,000 for a variety of larger-scale accessibility improvements. Public Invited to Attend Community Open House, Provide Comment on Safety Fence Design Options at Windmill Hill Park Bulkhead

The public is invited to attend a community open house to discuss the design of a short term safety fence around the Windmill Hill Park Bulkhead, 501 S. Union St. In response to community comments, staff from Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities will present five design options. The open house is scheduled for Wednesday, August 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Chet & Sabra Avery Conference Room, located in City Hall Room 2000, 301 King St. Individuals unable to attend the community open house may view design options and vote for their preferred option at and forward comments by Wednesday, August 22. Safety fence design options and public comment will be presented to the Old and Historic Board of Architectural Review at a Public Hearing on September 5, 7:30 p.m., in City Council Chambers (City Hall, 301 King St).
