The City of Alexandria has been encouraging more bicycle use for transportation and recreation as part of its City Council-approved "Spin City 2009" action plan to earn "Bicycle-Friendly Community" status from the League of American Bicyclists.

"Bicycle-Friendly communities are recognized as places with a high quality of life," said Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille. "The Spin City initiative will augment and enhance the existing
Community Pathways program and help us provide an integrated, multi-modal transportation system for the benefit and enjoyment of all our citizens."
"Increased bicycling brings reduced traffic demand, improved air quality, and greater physical fitness," said Richard Baier, Director of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services. "We are making this commitment because we want to be recognized as a municipality that supports active modes of transportation."
