Local Motion employer kits now available
The City of Alexandria’s Local Motion employer services program provides businesses and commuters assistance for using economical and eco-friendly transportation options. The best and easiest way an employer can help staff make wise transportation decisions is to request one of the newly available Local Motion employer kits.
The kit contains information about transportation options in the City and region. Question about carpooling? Want to know the recommended route for bicycle commuting? Brochures and system maps included in the employer kit make the answers easy to find. Employees want to save money and live a greener lifestyle and appreciate learning about their transportation options. Simply use the Information Request Form in the kit to order pamphlets and system maps for your employee lunchroom and orientation packets.
The employer kit is also a great introduction to the services provided by the Local Motion Employer Services team. City businesses regularly call on the team to assess, develop, implement, evaluate, and support commuter programs. There is no cost to employers for this free public service.
To request a Local Motion employer kit, contact Sam Salkin, your Local Motion representative, at 202-293-1391 x 304 or localmotion@urbantrans.com.

Bike to Work Day 2009 sponsorship and exhibit opportunities
The City of Alexandria is partnering with Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) again to throw one of the biggest Bike to Work Day events in the country! Alexandria businesses can demonstrate support for active living and environmentally-friendly commuting by sponsoring regional efforts and exhibiting at the City of Alexandria pit stop. Last year’s regional Bike to Work Day even resulted in nearly 7,000 commuters bicycling to work, many for the first time.
A Bike to Work Day sponsorship gives your company far-reaching visibility. Each cyclist, their employer, the general public, and media agencies receive promotional materials listing the names and logos of the sponsors supporting this important initiative. As one of the largest events in the country, your sponsorship will encourage more of the region’s 1.2 million commuters to choose bicycling as a cost-effective, traffic-reducing, way to get to work.
Bike to Work Day 2009 is Friday, May 15. This day, communities will hold special events called “pit stops” where registered participants receive a free t-shirt, are eligible for prize drawings, and enjoy free food and beverage. Top elected officials and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand for the party. Alexandria regularly hosts one of the largest pit stop turnouts in the DC metropolitan area and had more than 350 converge on Market Square last year to enjoy the festivities.
Thanks to the generous support of area organizations, last year an estimated one million residents heard radio advertisements, saw news footage, or read about Bike to Work Day as the result of mentions in media outlets such as 94.7 The Globe FM, NBC, and the Washington Post.
