For more than a year, residents, businesses, community organizations, neighboring civic groups, and property owners have worked with the City to create a vision for development that will occur in the Beauregard area in the next 20 to 30 years. On January 23, the City released a draft Small Area Plan for public comment and review.
The Alexandria City Council voted 5-2 to approve the Waterfront Small Area Plan. The Plan provides a framework for revitalizing Alexandria’s waterfront through several means, including: incorporating Alexandria’s history as a foundation for planning and design, expanding and enhancing public open spaces, improving public access and connectivity, promoting the waterfront as an arts and cultural destination, ensuring compatible development.
Any business that is interested in applying to participate in the food and beverage vendor cart program at Market Square may now apply by February 15, 2012. A pilot program was launched last year, and is being continued in 2012. In addition to submitting an application, vendors must purchase their own carts after design and health department approval by the City.

Snow and ice storms produce an average accumulation of 15 inches annually in Alexandria, generally spread over several events in a typical winter. The City tracks potential storms 24 hours per day, and clears snow from 521 lane miles of roadways, 20 miles of publicly owned sidewalks, walkways, and pathways, and 44 acres of municipal parking lots and publicly owned squares.
