Festival of the Arts image 

The Alexandria Festival of the Arts will be held on Saturday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on King Street between Washington Street and the Potomac River. This nationally-recognized art show features 150 juried artists exhibiting and selling original paintings, sculptures, photography, glass, ceramics, mixed media and much more.

Carlyle House image 

Revisit the 1814 surrender of Alexandria at Carlyle House this Saturday, August 23, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tour the historic house and talk to soldiers and citizens to learn why Alexandria gave in to the British in the War of 1812. Free lectures and more!

Citizens Academy image 

Get to know your City! The 8-week Alexandria Citizens Academy provides an opportunity for residents to learn about City government through first-hand experience and gain exposure to the wide range of government functions, services, activities and issues. The application deadline for the fall session is September 15.

Cambodian festival image 

The City’s Annual Cambodian Community Day Festival is scheduled for Sunday, August 24, from noon to 6 p.m. at Ben Brenman Park, 4800 Brenman Park Dr. The theme for the festival is "Discover Cambodia." Admission is free.

BIMStorm image 

From September 9-11, 2008, federal and city agencies, owners, developers, planners, architects, builders and the public will gather for a live BIMStorm™ in Alexandria. Due to Base Realignment and Closing (BRAC) in the area, the demographics of Alexandria will be changing. The Alexandria BIMStormTM will be an exercise to plan for this change and run scenarios.

Applications are now being accepted for the Alexandria Marketing Fund, a program reinvigorated by City Council in 2007 with the goal of fostering public-private partnerships that promote the City as a destination for visiting, shopping, dining and doing business. The application deadline is September 8.

School Supplies image 

On August 20, Alexandria Transit Company (ATC) will be conducting a School Supply Drive in partnership with Community Partners for Children. Passengers who bring new school supplies will receive a free ride on ATC’s DASH bus system.

NS Ethanol Transloading image 

In April 2008, Norfolk Southern Corporation began operating an ethanol transloading facility in the City's West End. To keep the community informed of the City's actions and correspondence regarding this facility, the City has established a new informational Web site.

What is Eco-City Alexandria?
Beginning in spring 2007, the City of Alexandria partnered with Virginia Tech’s Department of Urban Affairs and Planning (UAP) to design and facilitate a new, strategic collaborative planning process, called Eco-City Alexandria, to create an Eco-City Charter and Environmental Action Plan to guide Alexandria toward sustainability.

Eco-City Summit
The City held an Eco-City Summit at T.C. Williams High School on May 10. The Summit, which is part of the City’s Eco-City Alexandria Initiative, gave residents the opportunity to provide feedback, input, and discussion on the City's draft Eco-City Charter. Eco-City Café
The first-ever Eco-City Café hosted a series of roundtable discussions among various environmental issues facing Alexandria. More than 120 participants provided input and feedback that will be used to develop an Eco-City Charter and Environmental Action Plan.

"Green-Ventory"
The "Green-Ventory" Report is an inventory of existing City programs, plans, and examined best practices from across the country and around the world to create a Compendium of Model Programs and Practices.
Environmental Charter 
The Alexandria City Council approved the first Eco-City Alexandria Environmental Charter in the region at a public hearing on Saturday, June 14. The Eco-City Environmental Charter outlines the City’s guiding principles, vision, and overall environmental future. Public comments and feedback were solicited and incorporated into the draft Eco-City Environmental Charter, developed and approved by the Environmental Policy Commission on May 19.
