Report a Problem

The Office and Commission strive to respond to issues impacting Alexandrians and visitors to Alexandria. To this end, the Office of Human Rights, encourages citizens to report potential human rights issues so that they can be brought to the Commission’s attention.

The Commission and Office investigate a broad range of issues, and strive to address policies with discriminatory effects with just as much vigor as they strive to remedy blatant discrimination. For example, recently we have been notified of, and responded to:

  • gender-based pricing at hair salons and dry cleaners
  • compliance issues relating to the refueling assistance provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • non-payment of day laborers (link to new law)
  • discriminatory housing advertisements (link to applicable Code section)

If you believe you have witnessed, or have knowledge of, an issue that pertains to the Human Rights Code, please report it to our Office. The issues may involve:

  • housing
  • employment
  • public accommodations
  • health and social services
  • education
  • credit
  • city contracts
