Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities

The Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities ("ACPD") is a 17 member volunteer citizen body appointed by the Mayor and City Council to provide advice to the Mayor, City Council, and City Manager on policies, programs and legislation affecting Alexandria’s residents with physical and sensory disabilities.

Its mission is "to promote the rights of persons with disabilities by advocating for equality, dignity and independence through advising the community and advancing public awareness."

The ACPD is composed of 14 citizen members, a representative of the Alexandria Commission on Aging and two representatives of the business community (one from the Chamber of Commerce and one at-large). A majority of the citizen members are persons with disabilities.

Through its Executive Committee and five standing committees, the ACPD focuses its work on issues of Transportation, Accessibility Enhancement, Housing, Employment, and Public Awareness and Awards.

In addition, the ACPD makes recommendations regarding the City's affirmative action plan and provides a forum for the expression of concerns and problems by persons with disabilities.

The ACPD also serves as Alexandria's local Disabilities Services Board. In this role, the ACPD annually administers the local Rehabilitative Services Incentive Fund and every three years surveys people with physical and sensory disabilities and service providers about services. The results of the survey are used to develop a local Needs Assessment Report, which is provided to state and local officials.

The ACPD meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month in Room 2000, City Hall. For more information or reasonable accommodations, the City's Disability Resources Coordinator, Mike Hatfield, can be contacted at: 703-519-3357, 711 TTY
