Emergency Communications
The Alexandria Fire Communications Center handles approximately 17,000 fire and emergency medical dispatches per year and about 190,000 non-emergency calls.
The Communications Center is located at fire station 204 on Second Street. Staffing for each shift is one supervisor and two dispatchers. The four shifts work two twelve-hour day shifts followed by two-twelve hour night shifts which are then followed by four days off. Official shift times are 08:00 a.m. to 08:00 p.m. for the day shift and 08:00 p.m. to 08:00 a.m. for the night shift.
The Communications Center is managed by the Communications Coordinator, who works day work Monday through Friday. There also is one Network Engineer who works on the CAD system (HTE) and radio system, a Motorola 800 MHz eight channel trunked radio system with a backup 800 MHz non-trunked system operating on 3 frequency pairs.
The Alexandria Fire Communications Center is the backup Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for the Alexandria Police Department, the primary answering point for all E-911 calls. All calls, after being determined to be either fire or EMS, are transferred to the Fire Department and the appropriate dispatch is made.
All Emergency Communication Technicians (ECT) are trained in CPR and certified in Emergency Medical Dispatch.
