To better serve the residents and business-owners of the City of Alexandria, the Finance Department will post all News and Announcements concerning City and intergovernmental tax rates, tax programs, and tax filing and due dates here.  Check back regularly for updates.

New Business Tax System

The City is transitioning to a new tax system for business personal property taxes and business license tax.  If you need to make an on-line or phone payment for business personal property tax bills that were due before October 25, 2009, you may need to call  703.746.3909 to obtain your new account number.

Virginia State Tax Amnesty

From October 7 through December 5, delinquent taxpayers may pay back taxes to the state with no penalties and half the normal interest charges. All practitioners, not only tax professionals, should be aware of the Virginia Tax Amnesty Program when advising their clients.  An informative article on the program will be published in the October issue of Virginia Lawyer.

NOTE:  This amnesty does not apply to City taxes.

ECONOMIC DOWNTURN ASSISTANCE

The Alexandria Small Business Development Center (SBDC) would like to remind all area businesses that SBDC staff can be of assistance in this time of economic uncertainty. Small businesses can take steps to tighten their operations and improve their ability to survive and thrive. You can find a checklist of strategies that can be used on the SBDC website. This document, "Strategies For An Economic Downturn", was developed by Jack Parker, Alexandria SBDC's Business Analyst, and is being used throughout Virginia and in many other states nationwide.   • Deadline to submit Meal Sales Tax report and payment based on October's gross receipts.
  • Deadline to submit Transient Lodging Tax report and payment based on October's gross receipts.
  • Deadline to submit Admissions Tax report and payment based on October's receipts.  
  • Deadline to submit monthly Utility Tax report and payment for gas and electricity.
  • Deadline to submit Public Rights of Way Use Fee report and payment for quarter ending September 30. 
• December 15
  • Deadline to submit monthly Utility Tax report and payment for water.
• December 31
  • Deadline to submit Meal Sales Tax report and payment based on November's gross receipts.
