The Base Re-Alignment and Closure Commission’s decision to close offices in Northern Virginia impacts Department of Defense civilians and contractors, all of whom are highly skilled in technical areas.
 
JobLink Services to the workforce include: career planning, skill assessments, resume preparation, job leads and job placement, interview preparation and job transition options. Services to businesses in the area include: recruitment assistance, start-up and expansion assistance, referrals of qualified job applicants and entrepreneurship options.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has received a $1 million planning grant from the Department of Labor, Employment Training Administration to support the activities related to the 2005 Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission.

In September 2005, JobLink received notification from Arlington that $185,000 would be given to the Arlington/Alexandria Workforce Investment Consortium to initiate early community planning to ensure an effective workforce investment system response to worker impact resulting from base closures and realignments. JobLink was allocated approximately $44,000 (Phase I funding) to plan for the infrastructure required to respond to local base closures and realignments.

The allocation is based on the estimated 7,400 US Dept. of Defense jobs impacted within City limits.

JobLink is using funding to collaborate with the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership to:

1. Ascertain specific names of personnel affected with the intent to speak with them about JobLink's employment and training services
2. Ascertain impact base closures and realignments on busineses located on or near military lease properties with the intent of offering any dislocated employees training and employment services
3. Attempt to present these same services to local military commanders and leasing companies so thet they might pass it on to dislocated employees.
