Car Free Day is September 22 this year and everyone in the region will be encouraged to get around without cars and instead ride a train, bus, bicycle, carpool, vanpool, subway, or walk. To participate all you need to do is fill out the pledge form, then go car free or rely less on your car by going car-lite, it’s that simple! Once you pledge, you’re automatically entered for a chance to win great prizes!
As part of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan Update the City has developed an online survey and interactive map to collect input on existing walking, bicycle issues, needs, and ideas for improving the environment for walking and biking. The survey and map are available in English and Spanish and will be available for input through early October 2014. This is the first of many opportunities, including a public meeting on September 30 and events throughout the year, to help shape your City. Stay tuned for more information!
Sponsored by the City of Alexandria, the Van Start and Van Save programs provides temporary funding (up to $2,000) for vanpools having trouble filling all of their seats. The Van Start Program, which funds empty seats during the critical start up phase of new vanpools; and the Van Save Program, which is for existing vanpools that are experiencing problems in their passenger levels due to the loss of riders.
