Weekly Event Announcements for the City of Alexandria: July 3 – 9, 2010

Wednesday, July 7 – Lunch Bunch Concert at John Carlyle Park 
This Lunch Bunch Concert features music from Mystic Warriors (New Age Andes) at John Carlyle Park (300 John Carlyle St.) at noon. Wednesday, July 7 – Ben Brenman Park Concert
This Ben Brenman Park Concert features music from Hey Norton (Soul, R & B, and Swing) at the Ben Brenman Park Amphitheater (4800 Brenman Park Dr.) at 7 p.m. Concerts are cancelled in the event of inclement weather and subject to change without notice. Alexandria Library’s SummerQuest Program
Alexandria Library's SummerQuest reading program has begun, but it is not too late to sign up! Children ages 6-12 can sign up for SummerQuest (and children under 5 years old can sign up for SummerQuest Junior) at the children's desk at any of the four Alexandria Library branches. Specials event schedules are available at any branch or online at www.alexandria.lib.va.us. Upcoming SummerQuest events this week include:

  • Wednesday, July 7 at 3:30 p.m. children ages 6 – 12 are invited to “Something Fishy,” an introduction to our finned friends involving live fish. This free event is hosted by Under the Sea at Duncan Branch Library, 2501 Commonwealth Avenue.
  • Wednesday, July 7 at 4 p.m. children ages 6 – 12 are invited to Bingo Bash, where they can enjoy bingo and win a book! This free event is hosted at Beatley Central, 5005 Duke Street.
  • Thursday, July 8 at 4 p.m. children of all ages are invited to see Magician Joe Romano present “Books! The Magic is Real.” This free event is hosted at Burke Branch Library, 4701 Seminary Road.
  • Thursday, July 8 at 11 a.m. children ages two and older are invited to “Outdoor Fun” with sidewalk chalk, bubbles & more! This free event is hosted at Barrett Branch Library, 717 Queen Street.

Saturday, July 10 - Annual USA & City Birthday Celebration
The City of Alexandria will celebrate its 261st and the USA’s 234th birthday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Oronoco Bay Park, 100 Madison St., located at the Potomac River between Fairfax, Pendleton, and Madison Streets. July 10 – “Harlem’s Mart 125: The American Dream” Screening
At 4:30 p.m. at the Alexandria Black History Museum (902 Wythe St.), explore the history of Mart 125 and learn how it correlates to the “revitalization” of 125th Street, Harlem’s main commercial sector. This film follows the economic transition of 125th Street from the late 1960s to the present day, examining issues like urban renewal from a commercial standpoint. This free screening is part of Movies with a Mission, a series of films about Africa and the African Diaspora that seek to inform and inspire dialogue. Saturday, July 17 – Hidden History of Union Street Walking Tour
Join City Archaeologist Pam Cressey as she explores “The Hidden history of Union Street – Are We Walking on Water?” Meet at the northeast corner of King and Union streets at 10:30 a.m. and walk along Union to learn what archaeologists have found above and below the ground. Friday, July 16 and  Saturday, July 17 - 2010 Comcast Outdoor Film Festival
Comcast and the City of Alexandria present the Comcast Outdoor Film Festival at Waterfront Park, 1A Prince St. Movie goers are invited to enjoy two nights of free outdoor movies, featuring “The Blind Side” on July 16 and “Transformers Revenge of the Fallen” on July 17. Attendees can purchase their favorite movie snacks like fresh popcorn and homemade lemonade. Movies start at dusk. Movies may be cancelled due to inclement weather. Tuesday, July 20 – Alexandria Mentoring Partnership's Mentor Recruitment Cruise
Save the date for the Alexandria Mentoring Partnership's Annual Mentor Recruitment Cruise on July 20 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Join us for food and fun while taking advantage of a unique opportunity to learning about mentoring opportunities in the City of Alexandria. Tuesday, July 27 through Thursday, July 29 – Clio’s Kids History Camp
Register now for a three-day history camp for kids at The Lyceum, 201 S. Washington Street. Clio’s Kids History Camp introduces children, ages 5 through 7, to American history and life in historic Alexandria through artifacts, storytelling, singing and dancing, crafts, “old-fashioned” games, and visits to nearby historic places. This year campers will explore travel and transportation in Alexandria’s past and present! Advance registration is required. Fee of $105 includes snacks and souvenirs. West End Farmers’ Market 
The West End Farmers’ Market is open to the public on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through November 21 at Ben Brenman Park, 4800 Brenman Park Drive. This outdoor market is one of a kind in the City’s west end, featuring colorful displays of fresh, locally grown, in-season vegetables and fruits, gourmet coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, and fresh baked pastries. Upper King Street Fresh Farmers’ Market 
The Upper King Street Fresh Farmers’ Market, located at King Street Gardens Park, 1806 King St., is just a few steps from the King Street Metro Station. Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market 
Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market offers fresh, nutritious food and wares from local artisans. The market is open every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October 31. The Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market Management Team oversee the market, in cooperation with the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities.
